Van Hipp has served as chairman of American Defense International, Inc. (ADI) since the mid-1990s, providing strategic consulting in government relations, business development, and technology marketing across the security, defense, energy, and health care sectors. He has written on defense and cybersecurity issues and has appeared as a commentator on major news networks. Earlier in his career, Hipp chaired the South Carolina Republican Party and served as a member of the Presidential Electoral College.
A former Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army, Van Hipp oversaw reserve mobilization for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and later served as Principal Deputy General Counsel of the U.S. Navy. A Bronze Star recipient, he also received the Legion de Lafayette. Hipp holds degrees from Wofford College and the University of South Carolina School of Law and has contributed to academic and charitable boards.
